Eindhoven is cutting back on winter emergency shelters for the homeless: only for nights when it is freezing
Eindhoven will limit winter emergency shelter for the homeless next year. Only on nights when the temperature drops below zero will beds be available from the winter season 2025-2026.
Now the winter emergency shelter in Eindhoven starts when it first freezes and remains open permanently until spring. The municipality is receiving signals that the winter emergency shelter is making homeless people lazy. The Barka foundation, which cares about homeless Eastern European migrant workers, says that because of the winter emergency shelter, people see no reason to take action themselves. The permanent winter emergency shelter is therefore ‘counterproductive’, according to a letter to the municipal council.
