Traditional dance movements and fiery acting; it was an interesting spectacle for the residents of Meerhoven in recent weeks. On a lawn in the middle of Grasrijk, members of the Indian Malayali community practiced for their performance during Onam Festival.
Fullness and harmony, that is what it is all about during Onam, which is organized in the Blixems community center in Blixembosch. Sree Chirayath (39) walks away from the acting for a moment and explains why the group has settled on the Meerhoven playground. “Onam is an important festival in Malayali culture, where we show that we live happily and in harmony. Everyone in India knows Onam, but it is mainly celebrated in the south of India, in the province of Kerala. There, the festival is celebrated for ten days, we celebrate it here in one day.”
